Researchers believe copper combined with cholesterol may prevent the brain removing a protein which produces the brain-clogging plaques associated with Alzheimer’s.
The tap water link emerged from a study of rabbits fed a high cholesterol diet.
It has long been known that rabbits fed a cholesterol-rich diet develop many of the features of Alzheimer’s, leading researchers to use them as a model for studying the disease.
But two US scientists noticed that cholesterol-fed rabbits given distilled water to drink developed fewer amyloid beta plaques than those drinking tap water.
Further investigation revealed significant amounts of copper in the tap water of many laboratories housing rabbits used in Alzheimer’s research.
To test the copper connection, the scientists added trace amounts of the metal to distilled water given to a group of cholesterol-fed rabbits.
Rabbits receiving the copper additive for 10 weeks developed significantly more plaques and precursors called senile plaque-like structures (SPs) than cholesterol-fed rabbits that drank “pure” distilled water.
The copper-dosed rabbits were also less able to learn a difficult conditioning task than animals not receiving the supplement.
The study was reported in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The researchers concluded: “Although we can only speculate about how the effects of copper consumption in cholesterol-fed rabbits relate to those in humans, it is of note that the levels of copper in the cholesterol-fed rabbit drinking water that induced amyloid beta and SP-like structures are well below those considered safe for humans.”

We’re delighted to announce that as well as supplying domestic and commercial settings with our multi-function taps and water purifiers, we now serve the marine market.
Maintaining ample quantities of drinking water of sufficient quality poses several problems to the boat owner, most -significantly finding storage space for plastic bottled water, or risking the effects of stomach-churning impurities present in a fresh water tank.
The Quatreau SmartTap solves both problems and delivers additional benefits. The compact drinks station dispenses chilled, sparkling, boiling and / or ambient water at the touch of a button, which means no trips to the supermarket for bottled or sparkling water, no lost storage space for all those plastic bottles, and no saucepan required on board for hot drinks or blanching vegetables.
MotorBoat & Yachting features the Quatreau SmartTap in their November issue, commenting “Really convenient and will put a stop to the familiar bottled water avalanche every time you open the fridge after a rough trip”
Recently featured in Boating Business, innovator and company M.D. Roger Wiltshire advises that the Quatreau SmartTap is suitable for retrofit or new builds and is available in a range of finishes including brushed or polished solid 316 stainless steel, with left and right hand options.
The recently refitted Mia Elise II*, a 197 ft custom motor yacht with impressive leisure and entertainment facilities currently available for charter, benefits from the Quatreau SmartTap. Accommodating 12 guests and 15 crew, the yacht’s water requirements are assured thanks to the high volumes delivered by our Quatreau SmartTap, with purity guaranteed by the addition of our RODI water purifier.
The Quatreau SmartTap was also specified on performance cruiser Elfje. As Yachting World reports, energy efficiency and sustainability were top of owner Wendy Schmidt’s priorities for her custom built 172ft ketch. Quatreau SmartTap ensures the lowest possible energy consumption and highest performing thermal insulation, its solid 316 stainless steel build ensuring strength and longevity with low environmental impact.
The SmartTap’s standard in-line filtration removes impurities from the vessel’s water tank, but for extra peace of mind specifiers and vessel owners will undoubtedly opt for the optional under-counter water purifier which delivers up to 99.99% pure water, guaranteed free from micro-organisms and every other health-compromising contaminant or impurity. This purifier is the only system on the market to carry EPA certification for the removal of micro-organisms, and the Quatreau SmartTap is the only one of its kind manufactured in the UK, which guarantees excellent build quality compared to imported systems.

The plant is situated on a 2,100-acre property on the Cape Fear River in Fayetteville. It is there where a chemical called GenX — a potentially cancer-causing substance that is a byproduct of DuPont and Chemours’ manufacturing processes — is produced.
Wilmington residents are demanding to know if those toxic chemicals are making their way downriver into the city’s drinking water.
The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority co-authored a three-year study on the chemical’s elevated presence in the water. But as CBS News’ Jericka Duncan reports, the findings were never made available to the general public — not even to Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo.

However, modern water treatment is designed to identify and remove only a limited number of contaminants. Evidence continues to prove that we are getting more than we bargained for in the water we drink, cook, and wash with. Over the last decade, a growing number look to go beyond “legally safe” municipal water standards to protect themselves, their families, and pets.
Legally safe water does not mean pure. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets maximum allowable levels for only 91 out of thousands of contaminants in the Safe Drinking Water Act. At the same time, consumers are subjected to constant media reports about the latest harmful chemical toxins, drugs, and carcinogens being found regularly through tests of our legally safe municipal water.
In response, many consumers turn to bottled water or inexpensive filtration units such as water pitchers and units that clip to water faucets. While these are a step in the right direction, they are not capable of eliminating many of the chemicals and water-borne diseases in question.
OK, you go to the grocery store and have a choice to buy a chicken loaded with antibiotics and steroids or a free range raised chicken…one is legally safe and the other is totally safe…which one do you cook for your family? Your car needs new tires and you have a choice of retreaded used tires or new steel belted radials…one is legally safe and the other is totally safe…which ones do you ride your family on?
The above comparison is easily understood by you and majority of Consumers…and similarly applies in comparison to tap water vs. purified water. “The Clean Water Act regulates 91 contaminants…if tap water contains less than the Maximum Contaminate Levels of Acceptance (MCL) of each of these 91 contaminates, your water is legally safe. The EPA is looking at 7500 other contaminates not regulated but known to be in tap water and only considering regulating 104 more, hence tap water is not totally safe by standards…otherwise, why would they be looking to regulate more contaminates. Reports don’t reveal all. “Most Americans probably think they have a good idea of what’s being detected in their water. Federal law requires water providers to distribute annual “consumer confidence reports” that reveal levels of regulated contaminants. Providers are not, however, required to tell people if they find a contaminant that is not on a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency list. And there are no pharmaceuticals on the EPA list.” Now let’s consider recycled water referred to as Toilet To Tap…which contains even more than the 7500 contaminates found in tap water, yet politicos are allowing this (more than just the “ick factor”) to occur…remember, they are advertising to their public that your water is “safe” meaning “legally” because only 91 contaminates are regulated.
Any water treatment professional is familiar with the many health risks related to consuming unpurified water. What many people, even in the water industry, do not yet know is that tap water can interfere with the medications doctors prescribe.
Many prescription vials carry small brightly colored stickers that say “Take on an empty stomach” or “Do not take with dairy products or antacids.” The pharmacist places these stickers on the vial because the components of food, milk or antacids will inhibit the absorption of the medicine and render it partially or totally inactive. These same components are found in tap water and can render some medication inactive. Antibiotics, specifically tetracycline, norflaxin and ciprofloxacin can be affected in this way.
